Why is the Pimsleur Approach so effective?

Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a linguist who specifically studied and research on the topic of language acquisition, concentrated on understanding how little kids learn their first language:  Children hear sounds and are able to make sense of these sounds and add meaning to them, simply by hearing the same sounds / words and phrases over and over again.

This means, that we have in our brain a mechanism, that allows us to make sense of unknown sounds, if we only hear them often enough and in context with other sounds and actions. Even if you are not 3 years old anymore, your brain has retained this ability!

The Pimsleur audios are specifically prepared audio files to teach students a language from scratch. But not by first learning a long list with words by heart. This method to enlarge the vocabulary of a foreign language is not very effective! Matter of fact you will never learn just words only with the Pimsleur aprroach!

The Pimsleur method uses a progressive system that adds new words slowly. Therefore the student learns entire phrases immediately, and then has them repeated to him over time.

Listening and Repeating is the Key!

A set of Pimsleur audio lessons consists usually of ten 30 minute lessons, in which prgressively more words and phrases are added and the first ones are repeated.

Listening to each of these lessons a few times and speaking with the audio 'teacher', students pick up an excellent and correct accent and the right pronunciation from start.

And because the learning process is mostly listening and repeating after the teacher, the student makes progress fast and hardly notices that he or she is learning a big chunk of vocabulary, grammar and phrase structure at the same time.

Students Understand and Speak a Foreign Language quickly:

All of a sudden students who use the Pimsleur approach will realize that they are not only able to understand quite a bit of day to day phrases of the foreign language they are learning, but also that they are able to speak (!) the foreign language too.
